Frequently Asked Questions

What is Smart Mobility?

The growing need for mobility of people and goods leads to new challenges in our society. The pollution, congestion, stress, lack of space and loss of time due to increasing traffic flows urgently require a new approach. Smart Mobility is the umbrella term for all initiatives to make mobility more sustainable and improve the quality of life in our cities. Efficient transportation via road, rail and waterways is the key to a better, healthier and more prosperous future for everyone.

What is Mobility as a Service?

Mobility as a Service (MaaS) is the shift away from personal transportation devices to shared devices and mobility solutions that are offered as a service, using new technologies to find the most efficient combination. Bike-sharing and car-sharing, on-demand bus services, metro and train services are optimized into a time and energy-efficient trip, using online journey planners. Payment for MaaS is collectively managed and travelers can use online information on integrated transportation solutions to plan their travel.

Why do companies need a mobility policy?

The commute to work is an important part of people’s decision to accept or refuse a job. Staff retention efforts need to include solutions for mobility issues, such as flex work or home offices. Travel allowances and initiatives for sustainable mobility will attract employees and make the company future-proof. Business centers and industrial estates should look into aligning their mobility policies to create even more opportunities for smart mobility, such as for example the Office on Wheels.

What is the mobility budget?

Businesses need employees who commute to the office every day. As part of the salary package, company cars used to be a very popular item. With the growing concerns around sustainable mobility, more and more companies are considering adding a mobility budget to the salary package. This provides the employee with a monthly lump sum that they can spend on a broad range of transport solutions, combining for example car-sharing with public transport, thus optimizing their commute.

What is a Smart City?

A Smart City integrates the Internet of Things (IoT) and open data connections into an IT environment that allows the city to manage community services such as schools, hospitals and transportation systems, with the purpose of improving quality of the services and promoting interactivity between the city’s infrastructure and its citizens. Specifically for mobility, this means that individual citizens’ transportation patterns and traffic flows are monitored and the data are used to design more adequate or personalized transport services.

What is Connected Mobility?

Mobility is increasingly evolving towards not just being a means of transportation, but an integral part of society that requires careful planning. Thanks to the development of the Internet of Things (IoT), new mobility concepts and solutions can use citizens’ data about their mobility patterns to alleviate congested roads, improve the quality of life in polluted cities, develop a more efficient and sustainable transportation system and offer alternatives to citizens through online solutions.

What is the added value of flex work for businesses?

Flex work is a win-win situation for employees and businesses. Working from home or from a satellite office increases employee satisfaction, since it allows a better work-life balance and gives employees more autonomy over their work schedule, which are important arguments in employee retention. At the same time, flex work compensates costs for the employer, increases employee productivity and helps reduce commute travel time as less people are on the road at the exact same time.

How can I reduce the CO2 emission?

An important part of our CO2 emissions comes from people commuting to work and sitting in traffic jams. This has serious consequences for our climate. Innovative businesses are already focusing on ways they can help reduce these emissions through the introduction of flexible working hours and home offices, as well as changing the company’s car fleet to hybrid cars has. These measures will have a considerable impact on the level of greenhouse gasses, improving the air quality and making our cities more sustainable.
